Driving Licence Points A Guide For Drivers

This guide has been prepared by Intensive Driving Courses, and is intended to provide general information to help drivers to understand Driving Licence Points and to stay legal; whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the information is accurate and up to date, it is not intended to be a legal guide.

Committing any motoring offence can result in receiving one or more penalties such as:

Examples of points for different offences:

Traffic Light Offences3 points
Speeding3 to 6 points
Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence3 to 6 points
Using a handheld mobile phone when driving6 points
Failure to have proper control of a vehicle or full view of the road and traffic ahead3 points
Using a vehicle in a dangerous condition3 points
in each case
Driving without insurance6 to 8 points
Driving after refusal or revocation of licence on medical grounds3 to 6 points
Driving while disqualified6 points
Failing to stop after an accident or failing to report an accident5 to 10 points
Driving while unfit through drink or drugs or with excess alcohol: or failing to provide a specimen for analysis3 to 11 points
(if exceptionally not disqualified)
Careless and inconsiderate driving3 to 9 points
Causing death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs3 to 11 points
(if exceptionally not disqualified)
Dangerous driving3 to 11 points
(if exceptionally not disqualified)
Causing death by dangerous driving3 to 11 points

Totting Up Points

Any driver receiving 12 points in any 3 year period will receive a driving ban for a minimum of 6 months.

Newly Qualified Drivers And Points

Any driver accumulating 6 points within the first 2 years after passing their driving test will have their driving licence revoked.

They will then have to:

Any points already on the driving licence at the time of passing the driving test will count towards the 6 point total that would result in the driving licence being revoked.

If a driver already has 6 points on their driving licence before they pass the driving test, the licence is not immediately revoked, but any further points after passing the driving test will result in driving licence revocation.
